The Guitar Department of the Robert Schumann Hochschule Düsseldorf
The guitar department at the Robert Schumann University of Music is one of the oldest classical guitar departments in Germany. In 1969, Maritta Kersting (1935–2009) became a lecturer at the Düsseldorf Conservatory of Music. She was appointed professor in 1973 and taught at the Robert Schumann University of Music Düsseldorf (by then renamed) until her retirement. Many renowned guitarists trained in her class, including Professors Dieter Kreidler, Hans Gräf, Reinbert Evers, Karl-Heinz Wehnert-Bögner, Andreas Koch, Claudia Tornsäufer, Arne Harder, and Alexander-Sergei Ramirez. Since 1997, Professors Joaquín Clerch and Alexander-Sergei Ramirez have headed the guitar department. Many well-known guitarists of the younger generation were trained there, such as Rafael Aguirre, Mircea Gorgonzea, Nirse González, Andrea González, Samrat Mayumder, Yaroslava Ihnatenko, Airam de Vera, Julia Trintschuk, etc.
Interview: Clerch / Ramirez:
"Together, we have succeeded in creating a wonderful, family-like atmosphere in the guitar department of the university. Mutual respect and the exchange of ideas, knowledge, and experience are paramount. We are supported in the department by our outstanding colleagues Javier Conde (Flamenco), Arne Harder (Tabulature), Prof. Eduardo Inestal (Pedagogy / IMM), Björn Raithel (Contemporary Music), Prof. Anthony Spiri (Historical Performance Practice), Michiel Wiesenekker (Popular Music), and Juniors Zambrana (Latin American Music). We are delighted that our students from all over the world have won prizes at numerous important guitar competitions and have obtained leading positions at music academies worldwide."
We regularly invite guest lecturers to our music academy and organize our guitar festival "Viva la Guitarra!"
